Leading 3 mile chaser Joncol has been ruled out of this weekend’s Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury due to ground conditions by his trainer Paul Nolan.
The eight year old had been described as ’90%’ certain to run in the £150,000 guaranteed 3m2½f handicap, however now connections have had a change of heart and instead aim the gelding at the John Durkan at Punchestown.
His trainer Paul Nolan said ” We were all set to run and Joncol was due to travel over by ferry on Thursday night. But having spoken tonight to a few people who had looked at the track we got reports that the ground is quicker than we would like for Joncol.
“He is a big horse best suited by plenty of ease and the ground would appear to begoing the other way. Consequently, we have decided against running him.
“His next race will probably be the John Durkan Memorial Chase at Punchestown on December 11.”
Joncol had been a general 14/1 shot for the big race on Saturday.
