Difficult Draw for Irish U17s & U19s

The Republic of Ireland U17 and U19 international teams today learned their UEFA elite qualifying fate at a draw at UEFA headquarters in Switzerland today.

Paul Doolin’s Under 19 squad will travel to Portugal for the elite qualifying phase where they will face Israel, hosts Portugal and Ukraine from May 23-28 with only the top team progressing to the finals which take place in Estonia in July. The eight team finals will also act as a qualifier for the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey.

Doolin steered the under 19s to the semi-finals of the 2010/2011 Under 19 European Championships where they were beaten 5-0 by eventual champions, Spain.

Meanwhile, John Morling’s Under 17 squad face a massive task in their bid to qualify for the eight team finals in Slovenia in May 2012 as they were drawn against current European Champions, Netherlands alongside Serbia and Albania. The elite qualifying phase will take place in the Netherlands from March 22-27 and will also only see one team progressing to the finals.

Meanwhile, the draw for the 2012/13 first qualifying phase for the U17 and U19 UEFA Championships were also made in UEFA headquarters today.

The Irish U17 team will begin their campaign in October 2012 and will travel to Macedonia where they will face Romania, Sweden and hosts Macedonia.

The U19 team will travel to Luxembourg where they will meet Germany, Macedonia and Luxembourg which will also take place on October 2012.

The top two teams in east first qualifying group will advance to the elite qualifying phase
