On the second day of competition at the 2011 European Short Course Swimming Championships in Szczecin, Poland, Grainne Murphy has set a new Irish Senior Record in the 800m Freestyle.
Swimming in the fastest heat, Murphy was ranked 3rd heading into the event but was unfortunate to be outside of the medals, finishing 4th in a time of 8:19.39, to better her own record from last year’s Championships when she won a bronze medal. The race was won comfortably by Lotte Friis of Denmark in a time of 8:07.53.
Three other Irish swimmers were also in action today. Aisling Cooney performed well in the 50m Butterfly, finishing in a time of 28.40. HPC-UL swimmer Shani Stallard swam her second personal best of the competition in the 200m Breaststroke, finishing in a time of 2:27.78, whilst Bangor swimmer Clare Dawson also set a new personal best today in the 800m Freestyle (8:36.90).
The competition continues tomorrow (Saturday) and finishes on Sunday 11th December. Highlights on Day 3 will include 2008 Olympians Aisling Cooney (50 Backstroke) and Melanie Nocher (400 Freestyle), with Grainne Murphy also in action in the 400m Freestyle, an event she medalled at in last year’s competition.
