Galway 1-07 0-07 IT Sligo, 6:30pm, Ballyhaunis FT
New Galway football boss Alan Mulholland saw his charges make the perfect start to the season, with a hard fought three point victory over IT Sligo in Ballyhaunis on Wednesday night. It was important for the Tribesmen to hit the ground running in 2012 and this FBD League success was exactly what was required.
Despite the very testing conditions, Galway were fast into action and led by 0-1 to 0-0 after only six minutes. Shane Maughan hit the opening score of the game for the side in maroon. The same player kicked his second of the evening on fourteen minutes but by that stage IT Sligo had also registered two points and the teams were level at 0-2 apiece. The students then went ahead with a fine effort from Kenny Sweeney. The underdogs should have been further ahead during the latter stages of the first half, but the wind played havoc with their kicking, seeing them miss two scoreable opportunities. Sweeney eventually managed to add to his tally and increase his sides lead. Eugene Keating and Danny Cummins also got on the board for the students to help them establish a 0-6 to 0-3 halftime lead.
The turning point of the match came in the opening minute of the second period when Galway’s Shane Maughan fired a ball to the back of the net. The three pointer tied the game and left the inter-county side believing that they could win the contest. To their credit, IT Sligo hit back and went in front when O’Byrne pointed on thirty six minutes. Fintan O’Curraoin and Niall Coleman replied for Galway and Paul Conroy had the final say, when he kicked over a point on the stroke of full time. In a game that looked out of reach for long periods, Galway did well to come out on top by three points.
Mulholland and his backroom staff will have learned little from tonight’s game, as the conditions were almost unplayable and it was hard to get a grip on the game. However, a winning start is more than sufficient at this early stage of the season. There will be more difficult bridges to cross as the year progresses but for now a win is a win and Galway can go home satisfied with their evening’s work.
