Disgraced Aussie Rules scout, Ricky Nixon may not be in Ireland, as had been reported in the Australian press since he left that country last week.
The well known AFL scout is currently the subject of a major sex scandal in his native country involving a 17-year-old girl. The AFL Players Association began an investigation into the alleged ‘affair’ with the girl who is at the centre of the St Kilda nude photo scandal.
Nixon fled Australia last week and was understood to be heading to Ireland ahead of the Sigerson Cup weekend. He had previously used the inter-varsity competition to spot potential stars for the Australian game. He was responsible for bringing Kerry star, Tommy Walsh to St Kilda and has been linked with a number of Irish players in recent seasons.
A report in today’s Sydney Morning Herald suggests that Nixon might not travel to Dublin for the tournament as all. The newspaper states: “Close friends of Nixon yesterday said he was in England and might not even head to Ireland, as had been reported, to peruse Gaelic football talent.
Karl O’Kane from the Daily Star however has spoken to Nixon and reported that he was in Ireland. Melbourne newspaper The Age says that Nixon is unhappy with his treatment in the press and stated that he only wanted to help the teenager in question.
”It’s unfair how I’ve been portrayed by people who don’t know the facts,” he said.
