I.T Carlow dismayed at O’Byrne Cup ‘snub’

Updated: January 5, 2012

As we reported on SportsNewsIreland recently, Kilkenny have withdrawn from 2012 Bord na Mona O’Byrne Cup citing difficulties in finding a new Manager to replace long serving Dick Mullins who retired at the end of last season.

The County Board has however confirmed that the team will take its place in the forthcoming Allianz National Football League, Division Four.

IT Carlow have once again expressed their disappointment at being excluded from the O’Byrne Cup more especially as Kilkenny’s withdrawal (announced just before Christmas) leaves Louth with a ‘walk-over’, and seeking an opponent for a friendly game.
“There is a bit of disquiet about it,” IT Carlow GAA club chairman Cormac O’Toole told the Irish Daily Star.

“The criteria used to select the college teams for the 2011 O’Byrne Cup were the placings from the Higher Education League. I don’t know what criteria were used this year, but we are in the Division 1 final against UCC so we were obviously in the top tier”

“Kilkenny withdrawing rubbed salt into the wound.”

I.T Carlow had hoped for an invitation to assist them with their own preparation for the Sigerson Cup campaign and one can see their point of view especially having available such inter county stars as Wexford’s Ben Brosnan, Dylan Hayden of Wicklow and the

Laois duo, Kevin Meaney and Craig Rogers. DIT, DCU, Athlone IT and UCD all received invitations.
