Melbourne Victory set to appoint Magilton

Updated: January 7, 2012

Former Shamrock Rovers assistant manager Jim Magilton is set to be named as the new coach of Australian A-League side Melbourne Victory.

The former Northern Ireland international midfielder, who has previously managed at Ipswich and QPR, has arrived in Melbourne for talks aimed at finalising a deal.

The 42 year old, who missed out on the Northern Ireland job to his manager at Rovers, Michael O’Neill, began his career with Liverpool as a trainee before playing for Southampton, Oxford United and Ipswich in a career that lasted 15 year

If a deal can be reached than Magilton will take over from Mehmet Durakovic, who was axed on Friday just seven months and 14 matches into his tenure. It is believed that any deal would last until the end of the current A-League season at which point it would be reviewed.

Melbourne Victory are currently second bottom of the 10-team competition and have lost their last three matches.
