Portsmouth could not prevent a repeat of their 2010 FA Cup final defeat as Andre Villas-Boas’ Chelsea’s second half demolition of Pompey saw them triumph 4-0 at Stamford Bridge with goals from Lampard, Mata and Ramires.
The Premier League side suffered a scare early on when Dave Kitson escaped Luiz with only the goalkeeper to beat. The former Reading man’s effort was, however, in vain, much to the relief of the Brazilian.
Chelsea soon upped their game and on 11 minutes there was an appeal for a penalty as Pearce upended Torres in the box, but it was dismissed by the referee.
Just before the break, however, Pearce received a yellow card when he hacked Torres down after a period of impressive play.
Juan Mata eventually sent the Blues into the lead on 48 minutes after some sterling work by Florent Malouda, who set it up on a plate for the Spaniard to bury into the net.
There was controversy, however, as there had been appeals from the Pompey players in the build up to the goal, who claimed that Ashley Cole had handled the ball, but the referee remained steadfast.
Portsmouth almost equalised soon after when Kitson, aided by the erratic defending of David Luiz sent Futacs free, but Cech saved well. The resultant rebound shot from Norris was cleared off the line by Terry.
Greg Halford had a chance to put Portsmouth ahead on 73 minutes when Lawrence’s cross found him at the back post but the defender’s effort was tame.
Portsmouth fans roared for the dismissal of Terry on 75 minutes when his high challenge impeded Williams. The referee instead showed a yellow.
It was Chelsea’s turn to threaten soon after and on 85 minutes, Brazilian Ramires headed Torres’ cross into the net.
Ramires doubled his tally minutes later on 87 minutes, with Torres once again the provider, making it 3-0 to Chelsea.
Frank Lampard completed the rout with an injury time goal, making the final score 4-0 to Chelsea, as they cruised into the fourth round.
