McLeish: Given no longer first choice

Updated: January 11, 2012

Aston Villa manager Alex McLeish has warned Shay Given that he will have to fight to win his place back in the team after replacement Brad Guzan has impressed since the Donegal man’s injury last month.

Given suffered a hamstring injury at the start of December during Villa’s 1-0 defeat to Manchester United but is back training and may be fit in time for the visit of Everton on Saturday but McLeish says that even if the Irish international is ready he may stick with Guzan.

“Shay is not far away. He is champing on the door to be involved this weekend against Everton,” said McLeish.

“He is training with the group and it’s a case of how sharp he’s feeling and how confident he’s feeling before we make a decision about him coming back into the team.

“There are no guarantees of that, obviously, because of the way Brad has played. Brad has been fantastic.”

Given’s countryman Robbie Keane who is currently training with the club is expected to join Villa on loan from LA Galaxy in the coming days as the club awaits international clearance for the deal to go through.
