Following Bruce Grobbelaar’s rather revealing interview on Talksport where he stated that former club Liverpool were set to sign a South American striker from the Dutch league SportsNewsIreland looks at who the mystery goal getter might be.

Many have questioned the Zimbabwean’s comments believing them to be 12 months too late with Luis Suarez having pitched up at Anfield this time last year especially when a quick look down the striking charts in the Eredivisie reveals Dutch, Belgian, Serbian, Slovenian, Swedish and Swiss attackers.

If we are to believe the former Keepers comments than Liverpool can rule out a move for Bas Dost who is the current top scorer in Holland with 14 goals in 13 games, his five goals in the December match with Excelsior shooting him to the top of the pile.

The 22 year old has 5 goals in 10 games for the Dutch U21 international and at 6ft 5” has a big presence on the field.

PSV Edhinoven’s Dries Mertens is next in the charts with 13 goals, 3 ahead of former Liverpool target Ola Toivonen while another reported target, Swiss born, Luuk de Jong has also scored 10 goals.

Highly rated Tim Matavz is another who has scored freely with 10 goals in 16 games however the 23 year old is a Slovenian International.

The first South American to appear on the scoring charts is David Texeira who has 7 goals in 10 games, placing him joint 11 in the charts.

The 20 year old striker is a Uruguayan international and just like Luis Suarez began his career in Europe with FC Groningen, with whom he is currently plying his trade.

The former Defensor Sporting forward only moved to Holland in August and has played for the U20 national team alongside current Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates.

Of course, there is also Nicholas Lodeiro, the Ajax attacking midfielder who was previously linked with Liverpool. Like Texeira, Lodeira is a Uruguayan but with 12 caps and 18 months in European football the 22 year old has more experience.

The former Nacional player, like all talented South American’s has had to live with the Lionel Messi moniker, missed all of the 2010/2011 season through injury, but has returned to score 2 goals so far this season, including one in the Champions League.

Liverpool were interested in the player prior to his move to Holland with the player now injury free they may return with a bid for the player.
