Paul Nicholls revealed on Monday morning that a number of horses in his yard at Ditchet have been coughing, which has forced the champion trainer to cancel his media day ahead of the Cheltenham festival.
Nicholls suffered a rare dissapointing weekend after Zarkandar’s win in the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury on Friday. Nicholls ran 16 horses at the weekend without winning a single race.
Explaining in his Betfair column, Nicholls said “”It is fairly obvious that we had a moderate weekend with only one winner from 31 [Zarkandar at Newbury on Friday]. We have several horses coughing and not running to their form.
“”It is my duty to leave no stone unturned now as we prepare for the last three weeks before the festival and in these circumstances we do not feel it is appropriate to invite the media on Wednesday. I’m sure everyone agrees my horses and owners must come first at this stage.”
