Updated: February 20, 2012

Apart from the Irish athletes at the Olympic Games in London the country has reason to hope and expect that several top administrators and officials will also be chosen. Amateur boxing’s Michael Gallagher, recently voted Referee and Judge of the year 2011 is one likely to be such official.

Confirmation today that one of Ireland’s top technical officials, Hugh McAtamney is among 42 Technical Officials to be selected by the International Triathlon Union to officiate at the London Olympics.
As a result of nations such as Ireland working to develop high quality technical official training courses there will be seven nations officiating at the Olympic Triathlon for the first time.

The duties of the Technical Officials are to conduct the competition in accordance with the ITU Competition Rules. They are assigned to Registration, Start, Finish, Transition Area(s), Swim, Cycle, Run, Wheel Stations, Aid Stations, Technology and Vehicle Control. An adequate number of Technical Officials will be assigned to each area and will be responsible for the enforcement of ITU Competition Rules within their assigned jurisdiction. Assignments will be made at a later date.

SportsNewsIreland joins Triathlon Ireland in congratulating Hugh on his selection. A former President of Triathlon Ireland, Hugh is currently Course Chair at Dublin Institute of Technology and Technical Delegate & Official at the International Triathlon Union. He was the mastermind behind the triAthlone and European Triathlon Championships in Athlone in 2010.
