Grand National fancy, Backstage, was the star performer of the day, winning the Open contest under Jamie Codd, at The Pigeons in County Westmeath on Sunday.

The French-bred son of Passing Sale made his move three out, had leader,Newbay Prop in his sights two out and once Codd shook him up after the last, the horse strode away to win easily.

Gordon Elliott was delighted with the win and said: “That worked out perfect. Jamie was very impressed with him, he said he improved a lot for the last day (a winner at Kirkistown on February 12th). He’ll go straight to Aintree now for the National.”

Backstage had been well touted for last years Aintree race and was still in contention when brought down on the second circuit. He has once again been a market mover for this season’s renewal and must have every chance after a fine effort here.
