Cork Institute of Technology’s (CIT) newly-formed Powerlifting Club were the big winners over the weekend; winning its first medals in Gorey (host of the national championships each year) where the IDFPA (Irish Drug Free Powerlifting Association) held its Single Lifts Nationals Championships. Four gold and three bronze medals, plus a new national record came back to Cork with the students.

The IDFPA attracted 120 powerlifters from all over Ireland to compete in the three big lifts; the squat, bench and deadlifts. The event took place in the Naomh Eanna GAA Club. Highlight of the weekend came from James Hickey from Druncodath who deadlifted an amazing 320kg to set a new WDFPA world record in the 110kg senior class. In the women’s; Trish Lange got two gold medals in the Under 63.5kg class; lifting an impressive 65kg squat and 85kg deadlift.

Other competitions coming up are the National Deadlift Championships (March 10th) being held in River View Gym in Bandon and then the Powerlifting National Championships (untested) on April 14-15 in Sporties Gym, Killarney.
