Manchester Utd team v Ajax:
De Gea, Rafael, Jones, Smalling, Fabio, Nani, Park, Cleverley, Young, Berbatov & Hernandez
Wayne Rooney will miss the second leg of Manchester United’s Europa League tie with Ajax after picking up a virus that forced him out of training Wednesday.
Rooney is suffering a throat infection and with the tie relatively assured following the first leg, Sir Alex Ferguson looks set to hand the striker an evening off to try to recover in time for Sunday’s game against Norwich.
While Rooney watches from afar young Frenchman Paul Pogba looked set to start the tie. Pogba has been rumoured to be unsure about signing a new deal with the club due to his limited involvement with the first team.
However he has become a more regular part of Ferguson’s plan in recent weeks, appearing in all of his last five squads and now getting his chance against the Dutch side alongside Tom Cleverley in what could be United’s midfield of the future.
Phil Jones, Nani and Ashley Young are all expected to start.
Ajax are dealing with a raft of injuries with Derk Boerrigter(back), Gregory van der Wiel (groin), Eyong Enoh (hamstring), Andre Ooijer (calf) and Kolbeinn Sigthorsson (tibia/leg injury) all set to miss the clash.
Frank De Boer could also find himself without Nicolai Boilesen and Dimitry Bulikin is a doubt after being forced off after just half an hour against NEC at the weekend.
