Irish National Table Tennis gets underway

All roads lead to the ALSAA Fitness Club arena near Dublin Airport (Tel: (01) 886 3332  on  3rd/4th March as the 2012 Irish National Table Tennis Championships get underway, the last major domestic event before the Irish squad set out for the World Championships.

The ITTA has announced it latest ITTA Butterfly National Rankings in advance of the Championships. These lists will be used to formulate the seeding for the Nationals.

In the Men’s list, John Murphy retains his top ranking position, having progressed to the Final of the recent Fermanagh Open. The big mover is Ashley Robinson, who, following a big win over top ranked Murphy in the Final of the Fermanagh Open jumps from No.5 to No.3. Also on the move is Connacht’s Robbie Gavin who has climbed to his highest ranking for some time at No.8(up 3 places) from No.11)

In the Women’s list, the top 3 all remain the same, with Ashley Givan at 1, closely followed by Amanda Mogey and Sabina Devereux.  Jean Wyse breaks into the top 4 while lower down the list Emma Ludlow has jumped from 15 to 10 thanks to her fine performances in Fermanagh.



Once the Nationals are over, the top Irish players can look forward to the 2012 ITTF Liebherr World Team Championships, to be held this year in Dortmund, Germany from Sunday 25th March to Sunday 1st April.

Ireland’s Men(Murphy, McCreery, Robinson, Maguire) and Ireland’s Women(Mogey, Givan, O’Reilly) will both play in Division Three and have been drawn in the following groups:

Men – Division 3, Group I

1                 INDONESIA

2                CYPRUS

3                CHILE

4                LATVIA

5                MOLDOVA

6                IRELAND

This is a tough group for the Irish Men, drawn against top seeds and favourites for promotion Indonesia.

The Irish Women enjoy a higher World Ranking than their male counterparts and are seeded 3 in their Group K where they will be hopeful of recording some good victories.

6                MONGOLIA

Both teams open their Division 3 campaigns on the 25th March, with the men facing Cyprus and the Women taking on Armenia.
