Thoughts of BJ Botha on Foreign player limits

Updated: February 28, 2012

On Setanta’s iTalk Sport, South Africa and Munster Rugby star, BJ Botha was one of the main guests on this always entertaining show.

So what are BJ’s views on some of the the main rugby topics of the day, one wondered?

On proposed IRFU foreign player limits: Is damaging Irish rugby by denying an Irish player?

“I hope not. I take the opinion that I’m trying to give a little advice to the guys when I can. I try to bring guys through and create an environment where we can bring up the level in all positions. We’ve seen other internationals that are irreplaceable – someone like Isa Nacewa. Teams need those guys to help them perform, to help them on the European stage. I think it’s important to bring the guys up for sure but they’re married together. I don’t think you can have four unions competing together with Irish-only players. That’s quite unrealistic at the moment.

Would he like to stay on at Munster:

“Very much so, as a player you like to be settled and have consistency.”

BJ Botha on Tony McGahan:

Tony’s really been a sensational coach from my perspective. I’ve worked with him for six or seven months. Just arriving, he really made me feel a part of the side straight away. He’s really a big loss to Munster rugby.

Is Anthony Foley ready to take over?

Yeah. I know Anthony as our forwards coach so he deals with us much more often. Munster create an environment where we look after ourselves on and off the field.

iTalkSport is live every Sunday on Setanta Ireland at 11.30 am with Eoin McDevitt and Paul Kimmage.
