Cologne striker Lukas Podolski has said he is keen on becoming Arsenal’s first signing of the summer. The Polish born German international has been on Arsenal’s radar for some time and comes with a €20million (£16million stg) estimated transfer value.
“Bild”, the influential German newspaper, reported yesterday that a provisional agreement had been reached between Arsenal and Podolski, who is said to be keen on playing in the English Premier League. Podolski’s move is likely to hinge on whether or not Arsenal will play in next season’s Champions League.
Podolski has been in flying this season, scoring 15 goals and providing four assists in 19 appearances for his club. His versatility as either an out-and-out striker, or playing to the left of the main forward as he did during the 2010 World Cup, would certainly provide fresh options to Arsenal and crucial back-up to Robin Van Persie, who the north London club will do well to keep beyond the summer.
