FIFA to investigate suspicious World Cup match

Updated: March 1, 2012

FIFA has confirmed it will open an investigation into Bahrain’s  10-0  victory over Indonesia in a 2014 World Cup qualifying match.  Bahrain’s win has risen concerns because of the fact that they needed to overturn a nine goal deficit on rival Qatar in the group standings so as to have a chance of progressing.

Bahrain also required Qatar to lose to Iran, but the small Gulf island scored a late equaliser to secure a 2-2 draw and advanced to the next stage of Asian qualifying ahead of Bahrain.

FIFA says the probe is justified by “the unusual outcome against results expectation and head-to-head history, and in the interests of maintaining unequivocal confidence in our game.”
