Amazingly, Kerry have never beaten Down in the Championship and they travelled north with a chip on their shoulder after their humiliating 2010 Quarter-Final defeat to the Mourne men. Having been inconsistent so far this campaign (with one win and one bad defeat to Armagh); the Kingdom won quite comfortably in the end in Newry.
The 2011 All-Ireland Finalists turned the screw in the second half with Bryan Sheehan, Declan O’Sullivan and Barry John Keane chipping in with important scores in both halves as they pulled clear of the All-Ireland Finalists from the previous year. Down didn’t deal well with the stiff breeze in their favour in the first half and trailed 0-3 to 0-5 at the break with Poland, Hughes and Gordon scoring for the home side.
Poland slotted over a brace at the start of the second but Sheehan and O’Sullivan took their combined total to six points as the visitors pulled clear and the 34 times All-Ireland Champions were 0-11 to 0-6 ahead with 15 minutes remaining.
Poland added two further points to take his personal tally to 0-5 but Keane added another to take his own tally to 0-4 for the day with O’Sullivan and Sheehan adding two late points. Whilst Down to their credit kept plugging away; the Kerrymen played the cuter football and were good value for their six point win.
