A very open match, played in both ends of the pitch, saw United take in the 22nd minute through Wayne Rooney.

However, Fernando Llorente, who has long been linked with a move to the Premier League, did his reputation no harm as he drew his side level on the stroke of half time with a close range header.

United’s home form in Europe has come under scrutiny this season and sensing a shock the Spaniards went for the juggler, forcing David de Gea into a number of saves before taking the lead through Oscar de Marcos with 18 minutes to go.

Iker Muniain made it three one in the 90th minute before United were handed a lifeline with a dubious penalty awarded for handball, Rooney stepping up to score his second of the game

The loss to Bilbao means that Sir Alex Ferguson’s have now won just one game at home this season and this latest defeat means that United have tough task ahead of them if they are to make the last eight.
