No Turkish delight for O’Rourke in Istanbul

Updated: March 11, 2012

Derval O’Rourke’s dreams of a medal at the 2012 World Indoor Championships in Istanbul vanished when she finished a distant sixth behind world champion Sally Pearson of Australia who clocked 7.92 seconds in this Saturdays semi-final.

Though the Cork woman, who was drawn in lane two, had a season’s best 8.13 seconds, she never looked likely to get a top four qualifying place, following a slower reaction at the start. The Australian is a red hot favourite to win in Istanbul and indeed strike Gold in London 2012.

The second semi-final went to Bayta Shrott of Austria in 8.11 seconds, who claimed the last qualifying position albeit her time was but two-one-hundredths of a second faster than O’Rourke‘s first semi-final time.
