Ireland men’s hockey team moved one step closer to London 2012 qualification with a comfortable 3-0 win over Chile at Belfield this evening.
Timmy Cockram fired home the first score of the game from a short corner after just four minutes.
Michael Watt doubled Ireland’s lead eight minutes into the second half, and it was Watt who also added Ireland’s third in the 54th minute to complete the victory.
Ireland goalkeeper David Harte was a virtual spectator throughout as the result was never in any doubt.
The hosts now go into the final pool game against Malaysia on Saturday afternoon requiring just a draw to earn a place in the decider against Korea.
Only the tournament winners earn a guaranteed place at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Ireland, ranked 16th in the world, have never previously qualified.
