Joe Ward is guaranteed at least a silver medal at the 39th Chemistry Cup following a convincing win over Carlos Gongora of Ecuador in Halle, Germany on Friday night.
The Moate BC southpaw earned a 15-8 win over three, three minutes rounds at the Maritim Hotel.
Ward will now meet Russian light-heavyweight Egor Mekonstev in Saturday’s 81Kg final.
Earlier on Friday , Michael Conlan and David Oliver Joyce had to settle for bronze at the 20-nation tournament.
London 2012 Olympian Conlan was edged out on a 50-46 countback by Mongolia’s Serdamba Purevdorj following a tight flyweight contest which ended tied at 15-15.
The first round finished locked at 3-3 and Purevdorj edged 8-7 in front by the end of the second. Conlan, boxing well on the counter, won the third but it was the Mongolian that got the nod on accepted scores.
Joyce was trailing 12-7 going into the third round of his lightweight contest with Robson Conceicao of Brazil. The St Michael’s Athy man forced Conceicao into a standing count in the final frame but lost 17-10.
Meanwhile, Paddy Barnes lost out to German light-flyweight Hamza Touba in the day’s final session.
Barnes’ higher work-rate, particularly in the second round, failed to make a sufficient impression with the judges and he found himself 11-7 down going into the third before Touba, who was 4-2 up after the first, emerged with a 15-12 decision.
Adam Nolan also bowed out to a German opponent, the Bray BC welterweight losing 21-14 to Arayk Marutjian
