Man City the new comeback kings

Updated: March 22, 2012

At 9:15p.m. Wednesday night; the Premier League title race appeared to have been run with Manchester City losing 0-1 at home to Chelsea.

That would have left the home side four points adrift of their cross city rivals.   By 9:30p.m. however; the pressure was back on the Red Devils as City scored two late goals to force an unlikely win, putting the Sky Blues  back to within one point of the leaders.

Having netted a 78th minute penalty for the home side; Agüero, without a hint of celebration, picked the ball out of the net so as to take into the centre-circle to kick-off once again.  His alacrity was rewarded as Samuel Nasri netted a winner four minutes from time as all three points stayed at Eastlands.

Defeat for the Pensioners means that the only route to Champions League football next season looks likely to be them winning this season’s competition as they have now slipped five points behind Tottenham in the race for that coveted fourth place.

It was Roberto Di Matteo’s first defeat in five matches as interim manager of the three time Premier League champions.  However, if Chelsea do not win the Champions League this season; this defeat could well be the one that costs him his chance of managing the club long-term as it is almost certainly the result which will cost them a Champions League place for next season via their league position.
