Barcelona are lining up a move for Chelsea defender David Luiz.
Barca boss Pep Guardiola wants a long term replacement for 34 year old Carlos Puyol and has identified the versatile Brazilian (he can also play at left-back) as an option.
Luiz has made a huge impression since signing for the two Premier League champions, growing in stature throughout the season.
The 24 year-old was recently named the man-of-the-match in Chelsea’s famous 4-1 win over Napoli (5-4 on aggregate after extra-time) earlier this month as the west Londoners did enough to progress to the quarter-final stages with the defensive effort pivotal.
Chelsea bought Luiz for €25million from Benfica on a five-and-a-half-year contract on the last day of last year’s January transfer window.
It is thought that Barcelona will need to offer at least that fee if they are to secure the services of the man who played a major role in his side winning the 2009-’10 Portuguese league title.
Such were his performances for Benfica that he made his debut for the Brazilian national team shortly after the 2010 World Cup and has since gone on to win 11 international caps to date.
Guardiola’s efforts look doomed for failure especially with John Terry suffering from so many injuries of late.
