Schalke 04 have confirmed this week that they have made a lucrative new contract offer to former Real Madrid star Raul.
The 34 year-old’s current contract expires at the end of the season and the UEFA Champions League/European Cup all-time leading goalscorer has become a firm fan favourite in Gelsenkirchen.
Schalke are reportedly only willing to offer the Madrid native a 12 month contract however and with other clubs reportedly interested in his services, it is thought that Spain’s former national team captain – and veteran of three World Cups – might seek one final challenge before he retires from football. This final challenge is likely not to be with a German club however as clubs in both Italy’s Serie A and the Netherlands Eredivisie are reportedly monitoring his situation with Schalke.
Schalke sources have stated: “We have made Raul a really good offer and the ball is now in his court”, insisted Schalke president Clemens Tonnies. “We are proud that he is playing for us, but I don’t think offering him a two-year deal would make sense. We are willing to commit to one year.”
