Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher is confident that the decision to take an extended break from football to recover from inflammatory bowel disease will see him ready to return for the start of next season.
The Scottish captain has not played since November after he and the medical team at United agreed that he needed an extended period away was the best chance of ensuring he could play the game in the long term.
Speaking on BBC Scotland’s Sportscene programme, Fletcher said: “I’m still not ready to come back playing or training but I’m listening to the medical people and trying to get myself right. The challenge and the focus is to be ready for next season.”
Fletcher has been helping out the coaching staff at Old Trafford, after Paul Scholes came out of retirement in January, with the aim of returning to fitness and once again taking his place in the heart of the United midfield.
