McGee the hero for Irish Tennis in Cairo

Three outstanding  wins by James McGee  as Ireland won Monday morning’s  fifth –  and decisive –  rubber to overcome Egypt (3-2)  in their crucial relegation play off  battle in Europe/Africa Group II ,in Cairo.

McGee, 24, with a world ranking of 362 defeated Egypt’s Sherif Sabry 2-6 7-5 5-7 6-3 4-6 to add to his first day singles win over Karim -Mohamed Maamoun  6-2 4-6 2-6 5-7 whilst on Sunday he joined forces with Sam Barry to overcome the two Egyptians  6-3 6-7(3) 2-6 6-7(3).

Irish no. 1, Conor Niland who has not been enjoying the best of fortune in recent months lost his opening day singles against Sabry with the local player winning  2-6 6-1 6-0 6-2 though some 353 places lower in the latest

International rankings.   Barry went under against  Maamoun  6-3 6-7(4) 6-1 1-6 6-4 in the other singles game on Sunday. The Irish side has Garry Cahill as Team Captain.
