35 confirmed Irish Athletes for London Olympics

Over the past few months we have brought you regular news and updates on the Irish athletes hoping to qualify to represent their country at the 2012 London Olympics.

As of today (11th April) , some 35 athletes have achieved the necessary qualification standards and there are genuine hopes that by the date for finalising the team, between 50 and 55 will have achieved their life’s ambition.

Athletes will be nominated for selection to the Olympic Council of Ireland (OCI) in due course and in line with their National Federation/OCI Olympic qualification and selection agreement policies. Nominations come from the sport’s governing body and must be accompanied with a signed Team Member’s Agreement and the International Olympic Committee’s eligibility form. Then and only then can any athlete by ‘absolutely certain’ that they will be ‘ On the road to London’

Many of the qualifying events are still to come such as boxing where Ireland could qualify for an additional 5 to 7 slots.
We have great chances in Badminton, Modern Pentathlon, Triathlon, Swimming and possibly another one or two track and field stars.
