Sligo moved to within one win of lifting the Airtricity League Premier Division title following a 4-1 hammering of Derry City at the Showgrounds.
The Connacht outfit are now eight points clear atop the league table with just four games of the season left to play.
A crowd of more than 4,000 souls watched a 15th minute own goal from Ryan McBride, goals either side of half-time from Raffaele Cretaro and a second half goal from Lee Lynch gave the league leaders a vital three points, despite a consolation goal from David McDaid.
The opening goal came following sustained pressure from the home side. Joseph Ndo swung over a corner kick which McBride tapped into the net from close range under pressure from Sligo’s Gavin Peers.
The Bit O’ Red doubled their lead 20 minutes later when Stewart Greacan’s poor clearance was gifted to Raffaele Cretaro and the Tubbercurry man slotted home to make it 2-0.
Sligo continued to dominated and they deservedly increased their lead just before the hour mark when a bit of magic from Ndo allowed the Cameroonian to find Lee Lynch with an excellent ball. Lynch sent the ball to Cretaro who was under pressure from Greacen but calmly finished.
The visitors nicked a goal through one of their rare forward forays when Ruaidhri Higgins’ ball through the Sligo defence made its way to former Sligo man McDaid who beat Gary Rogers in goal midway through the second half.
The Derry goal had no impact on the game as Sligo continued to dominate. They sealed the rout with a fourth goal 14 minutes from through Lynch who finished excellently for what was the goal of the night.
Sligo can win the title next weekend with a win in Cork if other results go their way. It is a case of when not if the Bit O’ Red win their first top flight title for 35 years at this stage though.
