Godolphin trainer Mahmoud Al Zarooni will go before a BHA disciplinary panel on 16 August after two of his horses tested positive for banned substances in post race drug tests earlier this season. Both horses were found to have traces of the painkiller Propoxyphene in their urine samples.
The first positive test was on 19 April when Mariner’s Cross was found to have residue of the drug in his urine after his victory in the Wood Ditton Stakes at Newmarket. Lyric of Light also tested positive for the painkiller following her last place finish in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket on 6 May.
The disciplinary panel will investigate whether Al Zarooni is in breach of Rule (C)53 of the rules of racing which relates to positive samples in error / on veterinary advice. If Al Zarooni is found to have broken that rule he could be fined anything ranging from £750 – £10,000, with the entry point set at £1,000. The Wood Ditton could also be taken off Mariner’s Cross.
