Ireland’s Alanna Murphy won a second successive English ABA title here at the Manchester Boxing Centre of Excellence with a very convincing 27-9 points win over Yasmin Rogers of the St Mary’s ABC, in the 2012 Lightweight (60kg) category. The finals had been brought forward from next year when most of the Great Britain boxers would have been heavily involved in training for the Olympics.
Last year Murphy won the 64kg crown but this time moved down to 60kg. She was always well in control against the gallant Rogers.Irish boxing fans will recall that as a 15 yrs old – back in 2001 -the then Alanna Audley shared with Katie Taylor the honour of taking part in Ireland’s first ever licensed womens bout.
Since then their paths have rarely crossed in the ring – Murphy is English based but has joined her friend on many occasions as part of Ireland’s international squad most recently at the 2010 World Championships in Barbados when she fought at 64kg. Alanna now has new medal hopes for only last week the Commonwealth Games council admitted
womens boxing and there will be three weights in Glasgow 2014 inc 60kg.
