American goalkeeper to play for Rep of Ireland

American born Ryan Meara is set to play for the Ireland under-21 national team.

Ryan Meara who was born in the United States but has Irish grandparents has declared he wishes to play for Ireland. Meara has risen through the ranks of American soccer from being a college goalkeeper to starting in goals for the New York Red Bulls in the last year. The player has been called into the Irish under 21 squad for a game later this month against Denmark and a 2013 U-21 European championship qualifier against Italy on June 4.

Ireland under-21 coach Noel King said “We’ve been following him for a couple of months and then when he started their season as number one that was a big statement. He’s a big lad with good hands, and he’s a strong kicker.”

However, the Red Bulls do not have to release the player for these games if they so wish as they are not obligated to do so. They will not have any games during this period so it will be unlikely that they will prevent him from playing for Ireland.
