Preview:

Carlow and Antrim will meet at Casement Park on Saturday in Phase 1 of the SHC qualifiers. Antrim enter the match as favourites, but Carlow have pushed the Ulster county close in recent encounters.

Antrim have enjoyed the more successful Championship campaign thus far in 2010. The Ulster county overcame Laois by three points in their opening match, but lost by 3-16 to 1-11 to Wexford in the Leinster quarter finals. Antrim rebounded last week, however, defeating Westmeath by a score line of 2-25 to 1-19. Conor McCann (2-1) and Neil McManus (0-10) were the stars for Antrim as they got their Championship campaign back on track.

Carlow exited the Leinster Championship in the preliminary round, losing 4-10 to 1-14 to Westmeath.

The counties have been rivals in Division 2 of the league in recent seasons. In 2010 Carlow finished just above Antrim in fourth place. This season, however, Antrim came fourth in Division 2, while Carlow came sixth. The Ulster county were also 0-10 to 1-6 victors over Carlow.

The only previous Championship encounter between the teams came in 2010, when Antrim emerged victorious by a score line of 2-18 to 3-12.

After their recent close encounters, Antrim’s Neil McManus has said on Antrim’s GAA site that he expects “a hard battle”. McManus also admitted that Antrim have “drifted out of matches” in recent times.

“To beat Carlow and the other teams that are still in the Championship requires 70 minutes of hurling, and that is what we are looking to deliver on Saturday.”
In an interview with RTE, Antrim manager Dinny Cahill also admitted the Ulster team wasted numerous chances against Westmeath and the side needs to be “more clinical”.

Carlow manager Kevin Ryan has decided to keep goalkeeper Kevin Kehoe in his starting line-up, despite the keepers’ two costly errors against Westmeath in the Leinster preliminary round.

Carlow: K Kehoe; A Corcoran, S Kavanagh, D Shaw; E Coady, J Rogers, R Coady; E Nolan, B Doyle; C Doyle, E Byrne, P Kehoe; D Roberts, M Brennan, R Dunbar.

Antrim: C O’Connell; C McGuinness, C Donnelly, K McGourty; A Graffin M Herron, N McAuley, P Shiels, K Molloy; S McCrory, K Stewart, E McCloskey; C McCann, D Hamill, N McManus.
