Arsenal edged past Olympiacos in the Champions League on Wednesday. The Gunners won 2-1 after goals from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Andre Santos, while David Fuster scored for Olympiacos.

Arsenal left Robin van Persie, Aaron Ramsey and Kieran Gibbs on the bench as Arsene Wenger had one eye on the derby with Spurs at the weekend. The Gunners still started well and controlled the first twenty minutes.

Oxlade-Chamberlain opened the scoring in the 8th minute. The 18 year old controlled a long pass at the edge of the box before taking the ball across the area. The winger moved past two defenders before applying an accomplished finish into the bottom right hand corner of the net.

Djebbour almost equalised for Olympiacos in the 14th minute after some lax Arsenal defending from a corner. The ball dropped to Djebbour five yards from goal. Arteta blocked the weak shot on the goal line before Djebbour shot wide from the rebound.

Andre Santos doubled Arsenal’s lead in the 20th minute. A brilliant through ball found the Brazilian left back on the left wing. Santos crossed along the ground and almost found Chamakh, who was stretching for the ball. The cross was scrambled away, but Santos collected the ball, moved it onto his right foot and finished well.

Minutes later Chamakh had the chance to give Arsenal a commanding lead, but he shot tamely wide.

Olympiacos came back into the match in the 27th minute when Fuster scored. The Greek side took a quick corner, which surprised the Arsenal defence. Ibagaza was left unmarked in the Arsenal box and crossed for Fuster to score with a powerful header from the edge of the box.

Olympiacos built on the goal and were the better side for the rest of the half and a series of quality saves from Szczesny kept Arsenal’s lead intact. The keeper first saved a shot from Djebbour before turning away a Mirallas strike.

The second half was a tamer affair, with both sides failing to impress. Arsenal were able to control possession for the majority of the half, however, and held on to win.

Mirallas had the first chance of the second half and shot just wide from outside the box.

Moments later Oxlade-Chamberlain got behind the Olympiakos defence after a quality Marouane Chamakh through ball. The winger tried to delicately chip the keeper, but Costanzo saved.

The best attempt of the half came from Torosidis, who hit the bar with a beautifully struck shot from the edge of the box in the 64th minute.

The remaining 25 minute passed without serious incident, with an Arteta free kick and a blocked Kieran Gibbs shot being the only meaningful attempts on goal.

Arsenal sit second in Group F on four points, while Olympiacos are last after two losses.
