Arsenal are monitoring Ajax defender Gregory van der Wiel, according to Dutch newspaper AD with the 24 year old Dutch international keen to move abroad in order to further his career.
After four years as a first team regular in Amsterdam van der Wiel clearly feels that his ambitions cannot be satisfied by Ajax. Newcastle and Chelsea are both thought to be interested in the defender although Chelsea’s recent acquisition of Cesar Azpilicueta may rule them out of the race to sign the van der Wiel.
Arsene Wenger’s regular right back Bacary Sagna is still sidelined with a broken leg and he only has Carl Jenkinson in his squad as cover. Richard Law, an executive at Arsenal who is responsible for player contracts, was coy when quizzed on whether his side were preparing an offer for the Holland international.
When asked about a move for van der Wiel, Law said: “I cannot confirm or deny. We never make announcements on transfer issues.”
