Betting odds shorten for Irish boxers getting medals

Updated: August 1, 2012

As Ireland’s male boxers edge closer to becoming real Olympic medal contenders, Ladbrokes has tightened its odds considerably on Adam Nolan, Darren O’ Neill and John Joe Nevin* after their impressive wins.

Nevin, who was at 9/1 to win gold and evens for any medal has been cut to 7/1 and 6/4 respectively. O’ Neill is now 9/1 to win gold down from 12/1, and has been cut from 3/1 to 5/2 to win a medal. Nolan has plummeted from 40/1 to 20/1 to win gold and 7/1 to 5/1 to win any medal.

Hayley O’Connor of Ladbrokes said: “We’ve tightened up the odds on our boxers across the board following a great start. Paddy Barnes and Michael Conlan are still to fight, not to mention our great gold hope in Katie Taylor. We’re offering 6/4 that the team will win three medals or more in the ring and we expect to see a few takers.”
*updated odds on John Joe Nevin will be available on later this evening if he wins his bout against Kanat Abutalipov
