Carlow conquer Wexford

It was a fine evening for football as Carlow hosted Wexford at Dr. Cullen Park.

Carlow take the lead inside 40 seconds from a free from Quinlan.  Wexford level it up on three minutes but two quick scores put the hosts ahead on eight minutes.  Carlow 0-03 Wexford 0-01

Wexford fire off two quick points to level things up at three points apiece on 12 minutes.

Shanley scores for a free for Wexford to put the Slaneysiders ahead for the first time on 15 minutes with two quick scores putting the visitors three ahead ten minutes before the interval.  Carlow 0-03 Wexford 0-06

GOAL! Shane Webb goals and John Dwyer points and Carlow level 1-4 to 0-7 Wexford but then GOAL!!!…a Ronan O Brien cracker!! Carlow 2-04 Wexford 0-07 and the game has come to life five minutes before half-time!

Quinlan immediately adds another free to stretch the home side’s lead to four. Wexford look shell shocked. Carlow 2-05 Wexford 0-07

Chris Burke scores an excellent 45 for Carlow on the stroke of half-time to give his side a five point lead.

HALF-TIME: Carlow 2-06 Wexford 0-07 A great half of football. Only 5 wides in total. Carlow scored 2-01 in a minute, five minutes before the break to make the difference.

Niall Quinlan adds another free in the opening minute of the second half.  Carlow 2-07 Wexford 0-07

Eight minutes of second half pressure have yielded nothing but four bad wides from the visitors and Carlow score the next point from play from Chris Burke to put seven between the teams.  It’s a long way back for Wexford now.   Carlow 2-08 Wexford 0-07

Another Quinlan free puts the gap to eight midway through the second half.  Carlow 2-09 Wexford 0-07

Wexford go straight up the other end of the field and Shanley has a chance to score a goal for Wexford but a stunning save from Murphy stopped him. Shanley puts 45 wide and Carlow still lead by eight.

Both sides know the game is up going into the last ten minutes and Carlow take the foot off the pedal allowing Carlow in for a few scores though Quinlan replies with a free of his own.  Four minutes left and the scoreline reads Carlow 2-11 Wexford 0-09

The final few minutes of action are not particularly noteworthy but Carlow have won their first Minor Football Championship match since 2007 at the end of it.
