CFR Cluj vs. Manchester United:
Preview, Team news & Live score commentary updates
Manchester United will be looking to bounce back after a disappointing defeat to Tottenham at the weekend when they continue their Champions League campaign on Tuesday night when they take on CFR Cluj in Romania. Kick-Off 19:45
The two sides have never met before in European competition and this is only the third Champions League group-stage appearance for the Romanian champions, CFR Cluj. United won 1-0 against Galatasaray on Match-day one while Cluj shocked Braga 2-0 at the Estádio AXA.
United have never lost a match in Romania and this is the second time in concession that they will face a Romania side in the Champions League when they played Otelul Galati last season, winning both matches.
CFR Cluj domestic form this season certainly has been questionable as they currently lie in sixth placed after ten games and fine themselves nine points behind leaders Steaua Bucuresti. Cluj coach Ioan Andone looks set to adopt the same tactics he used in Braga with a 4-2-3-1 formation and the Romanian champions have a fully-fit squad ahead of their tie with United.
Centre-backs Nemanja Vidic, Chris Smalling, and Phil Jones are currently unavailable so Johnny Evans and Rio Ferdinand look set to continue their partnership. Antonio Valencia missed Saturday’s loss at Tottenham due to a ankle injury and hasn’t been included in the traveling squad to Romania so it appears that his knock is still a worry. Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, and Michael Carrick have been left back in Manchester as well. Fit-again Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie look set to lead the attack for United at the Stadionul Dr. Constantin Rădulescu.
One to Watch:
CFR Cluj – Rafael Bastos
The Brazilian winger was the hero on matchday one for the Railwaymen when he scored a brace against his former side Braga. With United currently struggling in defence, he will cause trouble with his trickery and pace down the flanks.
Manchester United – Wayne Rooney
Wayne Rooney came off the bench for the second half at the weekend and made an instinct impact for his side and despite United losing, his return is a massive boast to United hopes’ for silverware this weekend. Rooney should start alongside Robin Van Persie in Romania and will be particularly interesting to see how the pair work on Tuesday night.
