Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas will look to strengthen him defense by attempting to sign Atletico Madrid’s Uruguayan defender Diego Godin for over £15m in the January transfer window.
Godin has caught the eye of a number of big clubs after impressing in Uruguay’s semi final run in the World Cup but Atletico met Villareal’s £6m asking price.
Since then they have resisted offers from a number of sides including an attempt by Carlo Ancelotti to bring the centre-back to London last year for £15m.
Chelsea went on to sign David Luiz but Villas-Boas wants to bring another world class central defender after being unimpressed by Brazilian Alex since taking over at Stamford Bridge.
The 25 year old Godin signed a five year contract with Atletico in 2010 and it is likely Chelsea will have to make a bid of close to £20m and convince the 47 time capped Uruguayan that he will play a regular part at Stamford Bridge.
