Clongowes 38 Blackrock 20
Clongowes proved much too strong for Blackrock in their Leinster senior cup clash at Donnybrook on Monday afternoon.
Blackrock tried hard and on occasions were more than a match for their opponents but in the finish Clongowes just had too much class, as they recorded a record winning margin.
For the first thirty minutes there was nothing between the sides as they stood toe to toe and battled hard. Clongowes led by two Conor Mahony penalties to Mark Roche’s one. The game then changed in one crucial moment when a try-saving tackle by Harry Burns on Jack Dempsey stopped Blackrock from edging ahead. Minutes later Clongowes crossed the line as Conor Joyce went over for five points. Mahony added the conversion and his side were well on their way.
From the restart front-rows Gordon Freyne, Tom Collis and Byrne surged deep into Blackrock’s half before McFarland and McCarthy combined to set Mahony free. At 18-3, the game was over as a contest.
A Roche penalty gave Blackrock hope at the start of the second half, but two more tries by Gilsenan (46 minutes) and Gareth Murray (58) — with Mahony adding a conversion and a penalty to a Pierce Dargan try, converted by Roche for Blackrock put Clongowes into a 31-13 lead.
A try each followed, with Murray again scoring and Jordan Coughlan adding the conversion. Second-half replacement Laurence Leonard reduced the lead with an injury-time try, converted by Roche.
