Roscommon 1-9 – 0-14 Mayo
Sligo IT 2-08 – 0-8 NUI Galway
Galway 4-09 – Sligo 0-12
Leitrim 1-11 – 0-7 GMIT
Mayo finished their FBD league campaign with a 100 per cent record despite the best efforts of Roscommon’s Donie Shine who led a second-half comeback scoring four points in an entertaining game in Ballinlough yesterday.
Mayo had established an early first-half lead and comfortably led the Rossies by 0-7 to 0-2 at the interval. But a reshuffle by new Roscommon manager Des Newtown saw Donie revert to the half-forward line which caused Mayo problems.
However even a late goal from Keith Higgins wasn’t enough to snatch victory as the Mayo men held on thanks to two crucial scores from substitutes Barry Moran and Alan Dillon near the end of the game.
Saturday saw NUIG relinquish their 100 per cent record to deserving winners, Sligo IT, in Tourlestrane. The university outfit have already reached the final but were expected to finish the league in style.
In Tuam, goals from Nicky Joyce, a brace from former minor star Michael Martin and Mark Hehir helped Galway to a comprehensive win over Sligo yesterday. Martin notched up a personal tally of 2-03 and his first goal, a superb left-footed strike from 20 meters, rocked the visitors who never really got a foot-hold in the opening period.
A further two out of the four goals came in the first half with the Tribesmen leading 3-04 to 0-06 at the break. However Alan Mulholland’s troops didn’t have it all their own way in the second half as Kevin Walsh’s men staged a late comeback but Galway had enough in the tank to see them take the spoils.
Finally, Leitrim recorded their second win of the campaign with a 1-11 to 0-07 win over a disappointing GMIT outfit in Strokestown.
