Cork athlete, Derval O’Rourke, finished a close second in her first indoor outing of the season at the Linz International meeting in Austria last night.
American Yvette Lewis took the 60m race in 8.11 seconds, with O’Rourke right on her heels clocking 8.16. She had actually clocked a faster time earlier in the evening when she won her heat in 8.22 seconds.
O’Rourke was some ways off her national record of 7.84 seconds, which she set in 2006 when winning the World Indoor title in Moscow, but it usually takes the Cobh girl a few races to reach her full potential.
Having spent the last few months doing warm-weather training in South Africa, O’Rourke has more indoor races on her schedule over the coming weeks. Her major aim this season is the European Indoor Championships in Paris, which take place from March 4th-6th. O’Rourke won a bronze medal in Turin two years ago, and is targeting the gold this time round.
