Irish Daily Mail Sigerson Cup First Round

DIT 1-14 IT Carlow 0-11 AET
DIT qualified for the second round of this year’s Sigerson Cup with an extra time victory over IT Carlow. Carlow, who had made it to this year’s Higher Education league final, started well and opened an early two point lead through Ben Brosnan and Padraig Fogarty.
DIT replied with two points through Bernard Allen and Alan Freeman to level it up. Carlow took the ascendancy and looked the more dangerous going forward, as they went in five to four up at the interval. Carlow again got off the mark first with Brosnan scoring a brace for his side to leave three between the sides.
But once again DIT rallied with a brace from Freeman and excellent point from David Hughes to leave the sides level. Carlow looked like they had grabbed the winner with point from Darrel Hayden, but with two minutes of additional time played, Gearoid McKiernan pointed from the left wing to put the game to extra time. The sides traded frees in the opening minutes, DIT had hit the front for the first time with Allen kicking over a free, but this score was cancelled out for IT Carlow by Hayden. The main turning point of the contest was late in the first period when Eoin Reilly was fouled by the Carlow goalkeeper inside the square.
Freeman had his penalty kick saved but scored the rebound to put his side 1-10 to 0-10 ahead. Freeman kicked another free just before half time to leave the score at 1-11 to 0-10. Another point on the resumption put daylight between the sides before Carlow replied with what turned out to be little more than a consolation score. Freeman kicked another brace before the end to send his side through to the quarter final.
