The first round four action of the Dublin senior football championship takes place tonight in the Iveagh Grounds as the students take on St. Judes of Templeogue.
Judes come into the game off the back of an impressive win in round three defeating fellow division 1 side Lucan Sarsfields in very poor weather conditions last month in Newcastle. While UCD saw off the challenge of Ballyboden St. Endas in their previous championship encounter which on paper seems noteworthy, however Boden’s form has been shaky of late with the 2009 SFC winners only scraping by a tenacious Naomh Mearnog just weeks ago.
UCD are always a difficult prospect given the nationwide quality their set-up attracts, yet with one eye on the Sigerson in January, the students often come up short in this competition. Nonetheless, Judes will take them lightly at their peril. Expect Laois star Donie Kingston, who scored 1-7 against Boden, and Roscommon’s Niall Kilroy to feature heavily.
St. Judes will have to plenty to be confident about heading into this game though having captured the AFL division 1 title last year. Kevin McManamon was also Dublin’s stand-out forward this summer and with two under-21 All-Ireland medals in the back pocket’s of Paul Maguire and John Brian Carthy, Judes are certainly no push-overs. And if the hurlers decide to join up with them, their squad can look forward to supplementation by the likes of Danny Sutcliffe, a talented young dual-star who was on Anthony Daly’s panel this year.
Prediction: St. Judes by 1 or 2 points.
