The Dublin Super Cup takes place this weekend with Inter Milan, Chelsea and Celtic travelling to Dublin to take on an Airtricity League XI.
The Airtricity League team are managed by Damien Richardson and his assistant Kenny Cunningham and the side will be hoping to banish the memories of last year’s 7-1 loss to Manchester United.
Richardson named a preliminary 35 man squad in June for the tournament. Six of the team who faced Manchester United last season were included, while four internationals were also chosen. The squad was then cut down to 21 players last week. Players from St. Patrick’s Athletic and Sligo Rovers have been excluded due to their Europa League commitments.
Meanwhile, Inter Milan, Manchester City and Celtic all won their respective cup competitions last year and are bringing full strength squads to Dublin.
Inter Milan’s 24 man squad includes superstars like the much coveted Wesley Sneijder and the prolific Samuel Eto’o, while talented youth players like Davide Santon and Lorenzo Crisetig also make the journey to Dublin.
Manchester City have also included some of their promising youngsters, with Dedryck Boyaya, Vladimir Weiss and new signing Stefan Savic travelling to Ireland for the tournament. All eyes will be on City’s new signing Sergio Aguero, however. The Argentine has completed his £38m move to City and could make his debut during the competition. The enigmatic Mario Balotelli will also be a big draw for fans, as much for his unpredictable behaviour as his undeniable talent.
Celtic began their Scottish Premier League campaign with a 2-0 victory over Hibernian last weekend, but the Hoops are playing three friendlies this week. Wolves beat the Glasgow side 2-0 and Neil Lennon’s charges will be hoping for better outings against Inter Milan and the Airtricity League XI.
Saturday sees the Airtricity League XI face Manchester City at 2pm, with Inter Milan playing Celtic at 430pm. The Airtricity League team will then play Celtic at 2pm on Sunday, while Inter Milan and Manchester City will do battle at 430pm.
