Former finalist Wozniacki defeated in first round at US Open

Updated: August 29, 2012

Former world number one Caroline Wozniacki has been defeated in the first round of the US Open at Flushing Meadows in New York.

Irina-Camelia Begu, rated 96th in the world, beat the eighth seed in straight sets 6-2 6-2 and will now take her place in the second round of the year’s final grand slam.

Wozniacki has had a disappointing year having gone out in the first round at Wimbledon as well; for the Dane 2013 can’t come quickly enough.

Having won a Wimbledon single’s title as a girl Wozniacki had been tipped for the top, but so far a women’s grand slam title has eluded her.

However, the 22 year old has had a tough time lately with an injury which contributed to the loss against the un-seeded Romanian Begu.
Wozniacki had her right leg heavily strapped during the match in New York and she was not moving freely enough to ever mount a challenge against Begu.

The Dane sustained the injury at New Haven last week, a tournament she has won for the last four meetings, and had to pull out of her semi-final there against Maria Kirilenko.

Incidentally, Kirilenko had a comfortable win over South African Chanelle Scheepers in New York, coming out on top in a 6-2 6-1 victory.

Elsewhere there was also first round victories for Venus and Serena Williams, Angelique Kerber, Agnieszka Radwanska, Ana Ivanovic, Jelena Jankovic and Sara Errani.
