GAA Handball: Exciting Times Ahead In 2011

Exciting times for GAA Handball . At this time the Irish Juniors are doing very well in the USHA Open in San Diego whilst the new TG4 weekly Handball Show will commence on Monday 3rd January and run for eight weeks commencing at 20.30.

GAA Handball have also announced that the new-look GAA Showdown, launched for the first time in December 2009, will see a new format in on its new date announced as Saturday 29th January 2011 and promises to be a terrific social and high profile occasion for the sport of handball.

Following the temporary suspension of the Martin Donnelly Inter-Provincial football and hurling tournaments by the GAA, GAA Handball have restructured the ‘GAA Showdown’ as an Inter-Provincial event and will see the very best handballing talent from ages 13 up to 50+ compete for their province alongside high profile figures from Hurling, Gaelic football, Ladies football and Camogie.

The event will also see all 4 codes of handball adhered to on the day with 60×30 softball, hardball, 40×20 and one-wall handball all to be played as part of a very exciting occasion in Abbeylara, Longford, on Saturday 29th January 2011.

This will also be the climax to what promises to be a major new GAA initiative for Handball in Ireland with the GAA launching a ‘GAA Havin a Ball Initiative’, which will runs to 31st January 2011. This is a hugely exciting initiative and will see handball played in over 200 GAA Clubs around the country with major prizes up for grabs for both the GAA Clubs and the County Handball Committees who provide the best support for the initiative. Prizes will include the construction of a new 1-wall facility and county handball kits! Full details will be announced very soon with literature and marketing/promotion of the event to begin in early December 2010.

Overall, the 4 Provincial GAA Handball Teams for the new ‘GAA Inter-Provincial Handball Showdown’ have been announced below (as selected by the Provincial Handball Councils) and these will be added to at the launch of the event later At that stage it will be announced who the GAA Stars will be in each of the 4 provincial teams with Peter Canavan (Tyrone) and Graham Geraghty (Meath) just a couple who have already committed to this exciting TV event.

Meantime, Kilkenny legend, Michael ‘Ducksy’ Walsh and Mayo handball hero, Peadar McGee, both feature in Turtle Bunbury’s latest book Sporting Legends of Ireland, which was nominated for the William Hill Irish Sports Book of the Year Award 2010. The book features portrait interviews with 44 icons of Irish sport including Olympic gold medallists Ronnie Delany, Michael Carruth and Mary Peters, GAA legends DJ Carey, Jack O’Shea and Mick O’Connell, equestrian giants Eddie Macken, Willie Mullins and Ruby Walsh, and a host of champions such as Ken Doherty, Stephen Roche, Sonia O’Sullivan, Willie John McBride, and Packie Bonner.
