Three times All Ireland singles champion , Kerry’s Ashley Prendiville claimed the women’s Open title at this year’s GAA Handball/ICHA All-Ireland (40×20) Third Level Colleges (Intervarsities) singles Championships at Kingscourt at the weekend.
Prendiville easily defeated the up and coming Wicklow starlet, Shauna Hilley (I.T Tralee) 21-10 21-5 in a game where Prendiville ( from Ballymacelligott ) was on top from the outset producing her best handball skills including some explosive serving .
Prendiville you may recall won 3 All Ireland titles in 2010 over two codes and also was Assistant Manager of the Irish team which swept the board at the USHA Juniors in December in the United States.
Clare ace, Diarmuid Nash (NUIG) claimed the Men’s Open Singles title when he defeated Tipperary’s, Fergal Collins (IT Tralee), in a hard-fought final, over two games, also at Kingscourt.
In the first game, Nash was forced to pull out all the stops to overcome a robust challenge from Collins, eventually edging through, to close out, on a narrow score line of 21-18.
In the second game, Nash hit his stride, displaying his full array of lethal kill shots and silken passing shots, allied to his trademark “rocket-like” serve, as he blitzed through, to close out, on a decisive score line of 21-7 and seal a deserved victory.
